Ecco le prime notizie:
Taiwan residents were urged yesterday to brace for Typhoon Longwang, a strong typhoon that is expected to make landfall this morning, according to the Central Weather Bureau (CWB).
CWB, which gave a land warning of the storm early yesterday morning, announced that the center of the typhoon is expected to be 30 kilometers offshore from Hualien at 8:00 a.m. today. The strong winds and heavy precipitation brought on by the typhoon will cover the entire island once the center is over Hualien, said CWB.
The power of the typhoon might still be felt on Monday, CWB speculated. It stated that it was unable to determine if the force of the tropical storm will be strong enough to cancel school and work.
The landscape traveled over by Typhoon Longwang will determine its future course and strength, explained CWB. Judging from the information at hand, Taiwan will still experience wind and rain on Monday.
CWB urged the populace to stay away from beaches when the storm hits the island. It also cautioned residents living in the lowlands to brace against flash floods.
Premier Frank Hsieh reminded residents to store food and water. Those living in areas susceptive to mudslides or flooding are advised to prepare themselves and seek higher ground when necessary.
Hsieh, along with Minister of the Interior Su Jia-chyuan, visited the Central Disaster Prevention and Relief Center in Taipei to inspect the center's typhoon preparedness.
Similar stations around the country have gone on alert in the face of the impending tropical storm.
When prodded by reporters, Hsieh stated that the vegetable prices after the storm should be stabilized because of the abundance in supply for these goods. He urged to public not to panic, saying that price hikes might come about due to expectations from the consumers.
As of yesterday afternoon, Typhoon Longwang, the 19th storm this year, is moving west-northwest towards the island at a speed of 25 kilometers per hour. CWB has issued a land warning for the entire island on Saturday morning.
Meanwhile, prices for vegetables increased yesterday as Typhoon Longwang approached, with spring onions reaching as high as NT$260 per kilogram in Ilan's agricultural produce wholesale market.
Spring onions, a herb that is a must in Chinese cuisine, have been in serious short supply due to damage to crops by typhoons.
The sharp increases in spring onion prices have prompted a government investigation to see whether there has been illegal control of the market.
Officials with Ilan's agricultural association said the price increases have been the result of shortages.
They pointed out that the trade volume of spring onions at the county's wholesale market yesterday was 5.5 tons, only about one fourth of the usual volume in non-typhoon seasons.
The average selling price of the herb was NT$222 per kg, up NT$16 compared to Friday. The highest price reached NT$260, they said. In central Taiwan, vegetable prices increased about 10 percent because of strong demand in anticipation of Typhoon Longwang
