January 2020 Monthly Update

Average Arctic sea ice volume in January 2020 was 16,400 km³. This value is 1800 km³ above the record value of 14,600 km³ set in 2017, making it the fifth lowest on record. Monthly ice volume was 47% below the maximum in 1979 and 32% below the mean value for 1979-2019. January 2020 ice volume falls 0.5 standard deviations above the trend line. Daily volume anomalies for January show relatively normal ice growth rates for recent years (Fig 4). Average ice thickness is in the middle of the pack for the more recent years (Fig 5). Ice thickness anomalies for January 2020 relative to 2011-2018 (Fig 6) show positive anomalies in a band reaching from the Eastern Beaufort, across the Central Arctic with strong positive anomalies in the Barents Sea region. Deepest negative anomalies appear along the Canadian Archipelago and north of Greenland.
January ice thickness anomalies from PIOMAS agree very well with CryoSat 2 data from the Alfred Wegener Institute (Fig 7) with the strongest positive and negative anomalies in the right places. However CryoSat-2 data show total volume for January 2020 substantially than PIOMAS with 2020 January at record low levels over the 2011-2020 period. This despite the fact that sea ice extent is relatively high for the recent period. Not that CS2 retrievals are preliminary near real time products for Fall 2019 and Jan 2020.
