DIRETTA | Sky TG24
Cosa ne pensate? Droni russi arrivati in Polonia

Those who follow Russian affairs know that Putin’s propaganda is no longer confined to demonizing Ukraine. Finland — one of the most advanced democracies in the world — together with Poland, the Baltic republics, and Moldova, is now routinely portrayed as a Nazi stronghold, on par with Kyiv. In this narrative, Russia would sooner or later be “forced” to intervene in order to prevent the rise of a new Reich along its borders.
This rhetoric, crafted to prepare the Russian public for permanent war, has long been seeping into Italy, the UK, and other key EU countries — amplified by compliant media, compliant influencers, and compliant political leaders (some of them, apparently, outright compromised). It finds fertile ground among audiences unable to recognize the origin of disinformation or to defend themselves against it. I have lost count of the times I have seen my own posts flooded with comments from people sincerely convinced that the European Union is a Nazi regime, and that the President of the Commission is a dictator worse than Putin. Guess who profits from such delusions.
Now picture what would happen if this propaganda enabled anti-European and pro-Russian forces to prevail in Western European elections. How long could the European Union withstand the disintegrating pressure of populists? How long would the eurozone survive before dissolving back into national currencies and sovereign monetary policies? And how much weight would a fragmented Europe still carry on a global chessboard dominated by the three major autocracies? To which sphere of influence would the most fragile states — economically and militarily — such as Italy and the younger Eastern democracies, ultimately belong? And how much would the daily lives of citizens change in a context of such profound vulnerability, above all economic and cultural?
It may sound like political science fiction, but it is the new era we have entered. The reference points we grew up with are gone, and the prospect of a Russian “victory” amidst the indifference of an American autocracy is no longer implausible. “Victory” does not mean that Russia could march across and conquer the entire continent — of course not. But it could expand along its eastern frontier in the hope of restoring the borders of what Putin and his propagandists call “Greater Russia”: sovereign democratic nations that want nothing to do with Russian dictatorship. It could consolidate a sphere of influence stretching from the former satellites of Eastern Europe to the politically and culturally more vulnerable states in the West, such as Italy. And it could steer the disintegration of the European project “from within.” A disintegration functional not only to Moscow, but also to other autocracies, which would have no interest in stopping it. (Whether a shattered Europe and a much stronger Russia would also be a “benefit” to the United States remains to be seen — but the MAGA movement behaves as if it were).
The Russian drones over Poland are just the latest of the thousands of signals we receive every single day. Signals that are difficult, exhausting, almost painful to process. European democracies now face their greatest existential test since the Second World War. The European Union must become a power in its own right — not only economic, but also political and military — and it must put an end to the populist movements backed by Russia and by the new American administration. Otherwise, what awaits us is a stifling future, including on the economic front. To believe that the quality of our lives would remain untouched, that everything could quietly go on as before — at least in the private sphere — is nothing but yet another dangerous illusion.
