Non è che XP sia in giro da decenni, quand'è che l'hai provato? E le info dove le hai trovate? Io mi sono un po' documentato e ho scoperto il progetto "KDE on cygwin" il porting di KDE su XP.
"KDE on Cygwin is the port of Qt and KDE to Windows using Cygwin, the POSIX emulation layer for Windows, and the Cygwin XFree86 server"

Certo non è un porting al 100%, ecco qui uno screeshot

cmq non era quello con crygwin, sostituiva completamente explorer
l'avevo scoperto per caso leggendo i forum di p-i.it
non era particolamente stabile (sarÃ* stata la piattaforma su cui girava )
in seguito l'ho cercato per giorni e giorni e non l'ho più ritrovato, se lo trovi, fammi un fischio

C'è un tipo che nel giungo 2001 diceva queste cose (rimasugli di qualche forum)

What do you need to get KDE to replace explorer/IE?
- You need to get the port of XFree to "mix" its onscreen windows with the windows on windows's desktop.
- You need to get KDE to integrate windows from windows into its taskbar.
- You need to create replacements for the explorer executables that wrap into KDE.
- You will probably need cygwin or equivilent
