Eurasian snow cover is above normal but is lagging the two previous years at this time (Figure 10). With the predicted negative AO and the area of low geopotential heights and colder temperatures predicted to propagate eastward with time across Siberia, we anticipate the snow cover to continue its advance at a steady pace. The snow cover across Eurasia has advanced more to the west towards western Eurasia rather than to the south across East Asia, which is more typical. Therefore the snow cover advance has taken place at more northerly latitudes this October resulting in a negative snow advance index (SAI) value so far this month, since only snow cover equatorward of 60°N contributes to SAI values. North American snow cover advance has been tepid so far this month. However with the predicted strengthening eastern North America trough we expect the snow cover advance to increase as well across North America.
